Yacht Charter Packing Suggestions: What to Pack for a Week-Long Yacht Charter

Packing for a yacht charter vacation

Packing for a yacht charter vacation requires thoughtful preparation to ensure you have everything you need without overloading the limited space on board. Unlike a typical vacation, where you can easily access stores or services, a yacht charter demands careful planning to accommodate the unique environment and lifestyle on the water. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you pack efficiently for your week-long yacht adventure.

1. Luggage:

  • Opt for soft-sided luggage like a backpack or duffle bag, as hard-shell luggage can be challenging to stow in the yacht’s cabinets and may need to be stored next to your bed.

2. Sun Protection:

  • Bring reef-safe waterproof sunblock (avoid spray sunblock or oil-based sunscreen to protect the yacht’s surfaces).
Please be advised that many sunscreens are now ILLEGAL in the Virgin Islands. Only reef safe sunscreen should be purchased, please bring only mineral based sunscreens. The “Active Ingredients box on the packaging should only list Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Oxide. Chemicals such as oxybenzone, avobebsone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, octinoxate and others are banned. We also ask you not to bring spray sunscreen or self-tanners aboard as they can damage/stain the upholstery and deck on the boat and also lend to slippery or hazardous areas aboard.
  • Lip balm with SPF to protect your lips from the sun.
  • A hat with a strap or clip and polarized sunglasses with straps to protect against wind and sun glare.

3. Waterproofing and Safety:

  • Dry bags or Ziplock bags to keep money and electronics safe, especially when using the dinghy.
  • Passport and licenses, with digital copies stored securely.
  • Insect repellent to stay bite-free during your adventure.

4. Clothing Essentials:

  • Pack light with 3 swimsuits, 3 shorts or skirts, and 7 t-shirts or tank tops.
  • Water shoes for sea urchin protection, and comfortable shoes for hiking or walking.
  • A windbreaker or light raincoat for unexpected weather.

5. Onboard Comfort and Safety:

  • Seasickness remedies like pills, patches, or wristbands.
  • Camera gear with extra batteries and memory cards to capture your adventure.
  • 12-volt car chargers for electronic devices (ensure compatibility with yacht power).

6. Extras:

  • Playing cards, travel games, and music downloaded on your phone for offline enjoyment.
  • Small beach bag, earplugs, and eyeshades for added comfort.

7. Electronics and Adapters:

  • Yachts often have Euro outlets. Ensure your electronics are dual voltage (110-220V) before using adapters to avoid damage or fire hazards.

Additional Travel Tips:

  • Print out the charter base information to easily direct taxi drivers.
  • Confirm scuba diving arrangements with local dive shops and bring your certifications.
  • For fishing enthusiasts, check the licensing requirements before departure.
  • If traveling with children, bring well-fitted life jackets and consider requesting a safety net for extra protection.

Just for Fun:

  • Bring flags from your country, state, or favorite sports team to fly on your yacht, adding a personal touch to your journey.

What You Don’t Need:

  • Cooking utensils, navigation tools, and a basic first aid kit are already on board. Leave expensive jewelry at home for safety.

Important Reminders:

  • Notify credit card and cell phone companies of your travel plans to avoid service interruptions.
  • If chartering a bareboat, bring copies of your sailing credentials and any necessary boating licenses, especially for Jet Ski use in the Mediterranean.
  • If hiring a crew, consider bringing a card or envelope for tipping at the end of your trip.

By following these yacht charter packing tips, you’ll be well-prepared for a smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free vacation on the open seas. Safe travels!
