DAY ONE
Nassau to Allan Cays
- Distance: 34 nm
- Duration: 4h 50m
Allan Cay is a sanctuary for nature lovers, best known for its colony of endangered northern Bahamian rock iguanas. These prehistoric-looking yet gentle creatures roam the sun-warmed beaches, often approaching visitors in hopes of a leafy snack – fresh vegetables are their favorite. The cay is also home to seabirds such as the Audubon shearwater, adding to its rich ecological significance. Accessible only by boat, Allan Cay offers no shops or facilities, making it a true back-to-nature experience. Stroll the shoreline, swim in waters of remarkable clarity, or make your way to the island’s famous “signing tree,” adorned with keepsakes left by past visitors. As with all protected areas, interactions with wildlife should be respectful, and visitors are asked to leave nothing behind but footprints.
